What Do You Do? How to Talk About Work Without Assuming Someone’s Job or Income

Learn how to discuss work with a new international friend without making assumptions about their title, income, or working arrangement, with practical phrases that keep the conversation comfortable.

Start work conversations lightly

Asking someone you have just met, “What do you do?” is common, but attitudes toward questions about work vary across countries and cultures. Asking immediately whether someone has a permanent job, what rank they hold, or how much they earn can feel intrusive. Some people, including students, job seekers, freelancers, and caregivers, may also have situations that are difficult to sum up with a single label. Open-ended questions let the other person share only what they are comfortable discussing.

For example, try asking, “What have you been spending most of your time on lately?” or “Would it be okay if we talked about work or study?” If they mention their occupation, focus on their experience with a question such as, “What do you enjoy about that field?” It is safer to avoid assumptions about income or status, such as, “You must make a lot of money in that job,” or “Are you a manager at your age?”

In a text conversation using AI translation, short and clear sentences are helpful. Adding your intention—“I’m not asking for your job title; I’d just like to know what you’re interested in these days”—can reduce misunderstandings. During video or voice conversations, if the other person hesitates, change the question or give them a choice by saying, “It’s okay to skip this if you’d rather not talk about it.”

If the conversation becomes uncomfortable, move to a lighter topic such as hobbies, food, or music. If someone repeatedly asks for your income or personal information, or behaves disrespectfully, you can end the conversation and use the block or report feature. MangoTalk is a service for adults aged 20 and over. Respecting each other’s boundaries before focusing on each other’s work helps create more comfortable conversations across cultures.
